Risk Management
Resource Center
A curated library of free tools, training programs, safety resources, and industry guidance to help your contracting business reduce risk, lower insurance costs, and stay compliant.
Compiled by the team at Altamira Insurance Agency. Resources are third-party links — we don't endorse specific vendors.
Better Safety = Lower Insurance Costs
Your insurance premiums are directly tied to your risk profile. Contractors with strong safety programs, lower experience modification rates (X-mods), and clean loss histories consistently pay less for workers' comp, general liability, and commercial auto.
Beyond the cost savings, a proactive risk management program protects your employees, keeps your jobs running, and positions your business to compete for larger contracts that require documented safety programs.
The resources below are free or low-cost tools used by contractors across California and the Western US to build safer, more insurable businesses.

WCIRB — Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California
California's official source for workers' comp rates, class codes, X-Mod calculations, and employer resources — serving contractors since 1915.
What Is the WCIRB?
The Workers' Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California (WCIRB) is California's trusted, objective provider of workers' compensation information, advisory rates, and employer resources. Organized in 1915, the WCIRB collects premium and loss data on every California workers' comp policy, calculates experience modifications (X-Mods) for over 130,000 California businesses, and files advisory pure premium rates with the California Insurance Commissioner.
For California contractors, the WCIRB is the authoritative source for understanding class codes, X-Mods, dual wage thresholds, and workers' comp rates — all of which directly impact what you pay for coverage.

What Is an Experience Modification (X-Mod) and Why Does It Matter?
Your X-Mod is a percentage-based rating that compares your actual claims history to the average for businesses in your industry. It is calculated by the WCIRB using three years of audited payroll and loss data from your insurer.
X-Mod below 100
Better-than-average claims history → reduces your premium
X-Mod of 100
Average experience for your industry → no change to premium
X-Mod above 100
Worse-than-average claims history → increases your premium
Key fact: Claims reserve values — not just amounts paid — affect your X-Mod. The experience period covers three policy years, excluding the most recent year. A single large claim can elevate your X-Mod for up to four years.

Dual Wage Classifications — Critical for Contractors
California construction trades use dual wage classifications — two different rates apply based on whether a worker's hourly wage is above or below a WCIRB-specified threshold. Workers earning above the threshold qualify for a significantly lower rate because higher-wage workers statistically file fewer and less severe claims.
This means proper timekeeping and payroll documentation is not just a compliance issue — it's a direct cost savings opportunity. Without accurate records, all workers may be classified at the higher rate. Talk to Altamira about how dual wage thresholds apply to your trade.
